Joe Smooth - Perfect World

Now I don't usually go for this kind of thing unless I can absorb it within the appropriate context, but this here track is a rare late 80s gem, an early Chicago house track circa 1988 - just listen to that proto-acid bass line and the little squelchy synth-blurbles!

Now, besides the importance of Chicago house and Acid to the current electronic music scene, the particular context for this song happens to be the new mix-CD by Matt Edwards, aka Rekid (remember this?), under his Radio Slave guise (the first proper one released by him actually), entitled Radio Slave Presents Creature Of The Night.

As you can probably imagine, I hear a lot of mixes, but I can tell you Creature is really damn good. Edwards starts the mix up high, and pushes it even higher and harder, then takes the mix down, down, down - he says it should feel like "a snap shot of the last hour of one of [his] sets." So he goes from a Rub N Tug remix, to recent DFA signee Shit Robot, to some harder darker stuff like Lazy Fat People, his own remix of the Kills, the Roman Flügel remix of his own recent classic "My Beep," to the new Green Velvet single, then pulls the emergency brake with Villalobos' Señor Coconut remix, and Corey Heart. This old-school Chicago track sits between that and a super-rare 12" re-edit of the Osmonds (by another of Edwards' alter-egos Quiet Village), and closes with a 1979 slo-disco jam by Dennis Parker. All in all, it is a well balanced, very live-feeling mix.

Creature Of The Night is out in a couple of weeks on Belgium's consistently amazing Eskimo Recordings - right now, there is a pair of promo 12"s out there featuring some of the choice cuts from the mix, including this song and the Radio Slave remix of "No Wow" by the Kills (among a few others). Visit our friends at Forced Exposure to pick up the mix CD, starting November 7th.

Highly recommended.
