Spin it like you mean it

Remember when it was back around the year 2000? The music from all the late-90's electronica juggernauts was still going strong (Jaxx, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk), new acts like the Avalanches were lighting my ass on fire, and generally life was pretty darn good? There were some serious feel-good times that centered right around the Y2K mile marker, and the music that was coming out seemed to embody a great deal of that feeling. I'm not sure what has happened since, then, but I feel like that point in time was a kind of rare nexus that I find myself missing these days. Seriously - remember when you'd listen to Gimix on your way to the party, and it somehow seemed okay to get down with your inner hippie and get all swirly on the dance floor when the Chemical Brothers' Star Guitar got mixed in?
Well, maybe you do and maybe you don't. Regardless, I've been unable to resist listening to this track at least once on my commute for the past two weeks (the playcount on my iPod don't lie), and since this track has brought back a feeling I've been yearning for, I wanted to share.
With a name like Bossanova and a track title like Rare Brazil, you wouldn't expect Chris Storrow to be based in rainy and chilly Vancouver, but he is. The variety on his first LP, Hey, Sugar (which is quite a southern thing to say for such a northern lad) is tremendous, and the whole album plays like a party mix. An eclectic, strange and wonderful party mix. It took a whopping seven years to complete, and with the range that he demonstrates on his debut, one can see why - he probably could have released 10 albums featuring 10 styles under 10 aliases.
You can order Hey, Sugar [from Amazon] or [download via iTunes] if that's more to your liking. C'mon kids, get your spin on!
