First the Window then it's to the Wall
Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma.
I know that my friends on the east coast are busily getting buried in snow. The federal government even shut down early yesterday-- it was declared a congressional snow day. Part of me misses those days - of romping through the streets knee deep in slush, pushing out stuck cars, falling over, freezing your ass off. It's easy for me to romanticize this, since I live in Los Angeles. I won't ever see snow, unless I go back home again.
I do my best to take advantage of this - hiking into Malibu, hitting the beaches on the weekends. Still, there is a part of me that's just not yet used to a world without winter. I think Vampire Weekend understand what I'm getting at. They play the sort of wistful anachronistic pop that only comes from college students, particularly those on the east coast. There is a freedom to their sound - not exactly sloppy, but not exactly tight either. The drummer loses the beat towards the end and everything. Few responsibilities in a major city coupled with the comfort of a dorm room can create some pretty fun music.
It took me a few listens before I decided I liked this enough to post, but now I really like it. I think they have a grasp of classic melodies - those simple progressions that work every time. No need to re-invent the wheel when you've got that untucked charm of a sleepless night.
I don't know much about this band. They're from New York somewhere and play shows at places like Cakeshop and Pianos. These places are buried in snow right now, so it's not important. What's important is staying warm and putting on some good records. Think about boat shoes and summer time. Think about us on the west coast, staying warm and stealing your music.
