Sipping from the SXSW fire hose

Once again, SXSW is rolling up on us and they've released a massive torrent of mp3s from nearly all the bands involved. So, like last year, I decided to go through the whole thing (over 800 songs if you include the ones that are on the web site but not in the torrent), listen to every single track, and pick out the ones I like to provide you, gentle reader, with a slightly less intimidating list.

This year it was a harder task than last year. I'd really hoped to get it down to below a hundred, but there's just too much good stuff. Without further ado, here's my list of SXSW 2007 mp3s that I really like (in alphabetical order):

That should keep you busy for a couple hours.

Some really good ones, like Mammut, Bondo Do Role, Au Revoir Simone and Walter Meego

After finding three unlistenable tracks within the very first five listed above I decided not to persue further - thanks for taking the time though.

well aren't we freakishly generous?

alot of this is actually awful! would have benefited from a much shorter list with the true gems, cause they are *a few* good tracks.

Some good stuff. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Jandek didn't submit an MP3...

You missed Luminous Orange, Hot Club De Paris, Chris Letcher, and Tacks, the Boy Disaster at the least...

Also, Faceless Werewolves and Cruiserweight? You're kidding, right? At least you didn't put the stupid Blindspott song in.

Would you mind taking time to group these tracks into two categories: "Songs that Rock" and "Songs that Do Not Rock" - that would really help separate the poop from the gold.

Anders, you are brilliant. No one else has laid out such a comprehensive set of recs from SXSW.

My radio show usually pulls from sites all across the blogosphere. But tonight I'm just sending everyone to your site.

Anyone here who wants a short list can grab my setlist on my blog. (Shameless plug: You can also listen online tonight at 7 Central on http://kjhk.org.)

Can't say I captured all the gems though. I have a bias towards quirky instrumentation, oldtimey influences and indie pop. There's some standout metal and electronica in the original list that I nixed for consistency.

Thank you Anders, I love you.

I will marry Megan from The Last Town Chorus if she’ll let me. She can play “Modern Love” for me over and over and over and I’ll weep like a little baby. So beautiful. Yeah, put that song up here.

Very useful rapidshare search. It includes over 4 000 000 files. loadingvault.com is a best search engine designed to search files in various file sharing and uploading sites.

What, you didn't include the Right Ons? They had to be one of the most fun (and least depressing) bands that were at SXSW...but perhaps not unknown enough for your list.
