Popstatic - Mix Series Vol. 1: Part One "Fast Cars" + Part Two "Pretty Girls"
You know how we like posting DJ mixes here at Music For Robots - sometimes I put up my own mixes, but I really dig having mixes here by other DJs, especially when they're this good. Today I've got something very special from a DJ duo called Popstatic, aka Paul Salva & Jarrett Spiegel.
Salva got his start in Miami, organizing shows for WMC and starting an electro weekly night there, then headlined parties in San Jose, Costa Rica, and Toronto, moved to Milwaukee and got parties going there, now resides in San Francisco. He has done production duties on a full-length indie rap album for Kansas City-based MC Approach (with featured artists like Oh No, P.O.S., Deep Thinkers) that will be out later this year, and has opened shows for El-P and Lateef the Truthspeaker. Coincidentally, Salva won a contest for remixing Quannum Projects' (and MFR Vol. 1 alumni) APSCI in 2006 with a remix of "Bike Messanger Diaries".
Spiegel was a part of Walter Meego from 2005 through late 2006, a time that included work on the "Hollywood" and "Romantic" 12" singles (both of which also featured Salva remixes) and the Make It High Mixtape. He got his start in college radio at KJHK in Kansas, and has since DJed/played alongside: Soulwax + 2ManyDJs, Cut Copy, Hot Chip, Chromeo, The Presets, The Coup (which was a big personal highlight because they're one of his all time favorite acts), and Holy Fuck among others. Spiegel also has played at London's Herbal for Samurai Sessions with Samurai.FM, and the Modular party in NYC.
The word from the boys is that they "have immediate plans to hit the studio later this month to write tracks for our very first twelve inch" - their production aesthetic will be a fun and dirty "DSP'ed combination of disco samples and bass music" - sounds awesome to me.
