I'm a man, but I trust like a boy

butane variations

I think one of the best effects of the so-called "year indie broke" in 2004 - or whatever bullshit we were supposed to believe about how The Shins and Modest Mouse got really popular - is the acceptance of whimsy into the mainstream. And not that manufactured marketing whimsy that you see in funny commercials, but actual whimsy. People seem more open-minded regarding songs in which there is, say, "dirt on your fries, hope it's right when you die." I could even see, given a big marketing push, a song about that woman from Private Benjamin getting some attention.

Butane Variations - Goldie Hawn.

For lack of a much better word, Butane Variations' new self-titled record is neat. There are such sweet moments that pop up here and there, and the horn and banjo phrases on this song are a case in point. And that pedal steel - who saw that coming?

And hey, check this out: Butane Variations will be hosting a "Bring Your Own BBQ" event on Sunday for you New Yorkers. There will be 36 grills on the roof at 84 North 9th/Wythe in Williamsburg, and it's free if you bring stuff to throw on those grills. Butane will be playing an early evening set. Free music, some grilled stuff on the roof in July, what else do you want out of summer? I'm jealous of you Big Apple kids. Again.

Butane Variations comes out on Achord Recordings on August 14. Also, visit the site to purchase their EP.
