I Wanna Hurry Home to You
The National - Slow Show (Daytrotter Session)
I'm never sure what to do when the lyrics of a song so accurately depict shit from my own life. I know that I'm not the only asshole out there getting punched in the face whenever he sings "You know I dreamed about you for 29 years before I saw you" or how he's going to run home and put on a slow dumb show for his girl and make her laugh. It's what we all do, and he's put it so succintly. This is where the National shine, at least in my book. Their lyrics and music are tailor made for my generation -- the late 20s early 30s folks who are still trying to get their shit together in life and love and might have one figured out but not the other. And then these assholes have to come along and paint such a glorious picture of hope that you can't help but resent them a little bit for putting ideas in your head.
Still, the song is pure National and one of the best in their catalogue. I know there are some haters out there who would rather listen to Spoon or whatever. And that's fine. I think the National are 100% genuine in what they do, and that's why I like them so much. At the end of the day they're just nice guys trying to figure it all out, one song at a time. What's not to like?
Normally I wouldn't post a daytrotter song. I think that Sean over there is doing an absolutely amazing job and I don't want to steal any of his thunder. His writing and selection is outstanding, so most of the time there's no need to post one of this songs. But when he gets one of my favorite bands to record on of my favorite songs I can't pass up the opportunity to talk about it. I'm a nerd like that. Life is hard.
You should go check out the rest of the set. Especially their cover of Psychedelic Furs' "pretty in pink." They do it justice for sure.
