I'm Not Sure Where My Future Lies

Bottom of the Hudson - Bee Hive.

Monday night I was flying home to Los Angeles from New Hampshire. I was surrounded on all sides by unaccompanied minors, which, after a relaxing weekend in the water, really shocked me back into reality. I put on the first record that I thought would do me right on the long haul across the country, and that was Bottom of the Hudson's Fantastic Hawk. I had no idea that they were suffering, or that bassist Trevor Butler had died. I'm told now that drummer Greg Lytle is recovering from his fractured skull.

I hate hearing these stories -- young bands, a wonderful new release under their belts, the road stretched out in front of them both metaphorically and literally. It's hard to come back from a loss like this, but it happens. Even though Dax from Subtle is paralyzed, the band continues to make music. Even though his bandmates died, the guitarist from the Exploding Hearts has formed a new band with promise. There can be happy endings here, and I wish the surviving members of the band my deepest condolences and heartfelt hope.

I'm also told that Philadelphia's A-sides will be peforming a benefit show on August 30th. They too have released an excellent album this year, and those of you in Philly should check it out.

for those of you interested in donating to the band's medical + memorial services, you can find a link here.
