8 Bits is enough

Leeni - Perfection Interrupted

What do you get when you give a singer-songwriter type a GameBoy?

All of us music AND gaming nerds know it means something awesome.

Leeni is another one of those rare examples where we were contacted by a band via myspace - fully understood to be a place awash in a sea of mediocrity - but the music turns out to be really excellent. Leeni is a great example of lo-fi electronics wedded to quality songwriting and a solid voice, as her most recent, self-released album 8 Bit Heart demonstrates.

The record is a pretty big departure, sonically speaking, from her earlier work, which is much more straightforward voice + guitar-based. Leeni established herself this way as a part of the indie scene in Seattle, where she lives. But her musical talents (she's been singing and playing instruments since she was a little kid) are such that she was able to take up a new instrument - in this case, a GameBoy with software to use it as a synthesizer - and use it to craft some really great songs. If you like this track, also check out "Raw Footage" and "Headphones on Your Heart".

You can buy 8 Bit Heart from CD Baby, and I believe it will be available on iTunes soon too. Check her myspace page to hear more songs and see what gigs she has lined up.

Greetings independent music critics!

As a fan would say on my favorite local sports radio show – WFAN 660- I am a first time blogger (caller), long time listener (of music)!

I feel a lot of us, as avid music connoisseurs, have our favorite artists which we keep in frequent rotation. But from time to time we become eager and curious to see what else is out there. This urge can be for a sound, a feel, similar artist or in my case- any random genre- i.e. I consider myself a huge fan of Okkervil River and am super excited about their new album… although right now I have a constant hankering for R&B! I am in love with any good R&B/funk/soul and once I came across the box set- What It Is!: The R&B/Funk rarities of the 1960-1970’s, I knew it was a keeper. And this led me to my newest acquisition- The Last Soul Company: MALACO. This is some great southern funk and blues, enough to quench my thirst for a while!

Although, as we all know… the search for new music is never-ending… And personally, when I satisfy one side of my musical brain- I explore the other for something completely different!

This time, I had no idea what I was looking for, which sort of lead me to something which I had no idea what it was! Mojo Magnet. What I really looking for this??? …But the more I listened to it, the more it found me. A description of Mojo Magnet would definitely been seen as somewhat quirky, but then again, somewhat he’s not. His songwriting skills are definitely prolific. My best comparison would be along the lines of Beck. How an artist can evolve from Mellow Gold- to Midnight Vultures- to Sea Change, Mojo accomplishes this. The thing is… Mojo does this all in one album! It’s like putting your player on shuffle and being surprised at what comes up… except with Mojo’s album Specnabulous (…don’t ask me what it means) it has the same effect playing it straight through!

Anyways, you can go see for yourself- that is what it’s all about, right?!

Here are some links to what I was talking about…

Malaco’s own internet radio- this is PERFECT music to groove to while working!
