Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee

How do you make music that is simultaneously funky, textured, and lighter than air? As a musician, I don't understand how it's possible. Yet it happens all the time, of course. Beck does it, Belle & Sebastian do it, Of Montreal does it, Marvin Gaye did it. And remember Geggy Tah? Maybe the key is not worrying about it.
White Shoes & The Couples Company - Tentang Cita.
The looseness on this track, combined with the clockwork of its rhythm section, is what makes this song amazing, and they certainly don't sound like they're worrying about much. White Shoes & The Couples Company hail from Indonesia, and "Tentang Cita" reportedly translates to "About Love." Sure sounds like it, doesn't it?
This is a great late-summer song, full of drowsy vocals and chiming organs. Their self-titled debut is just as loose and pleasant as this track, and it includes a 9-minute orchestral reprise of one of the record's key songs. They pull this off, too, and I'm not sure how.
White Shoes & The Couples Company, comes out digitally Sept. 25 (and on disc in October) on Minty Fresh. You can, and definitely should, pre-order it here (click on "purchase").
