Deep inside the building

mystery palace

I've been meaning to get to this one for a while. Not only does Minneapolis have a strong music scene in general, there are some pretty great electronic bands. I'm thinking primarily of Digitata, but another band uses beats just as effectively, and that band is Mystery Palace.

Mystery Palace - Nascar Survivor.

In fact, Mystery Palace and Digitata often share bills, and it's easy to see why. While Digitata is a little more pop-based, both bands have songs whose production is incidental to the songs.

This is a great headphone track - sounds come in from unexpected places and leave in others; it's full of textures so complex they take your brain by surprise. I love how it glitches out in the end, disappearing as if its mechanism were suddenly switched off.

"Nascar Survivor" comes from Mystery Palace's record Flags Forward. Buy it from the band's label, Zod Records. Don't forget your headphones.
