Float With Me
Last night was the first night I'd stayed home in about a month. This is not to brag about my wild night life (it's anything but wild) but more to try and explain where I've been these last few weeks. Even as the noble Blair has valiently posted without a break, sometimes I just need some time to clear my head and forget all about music for a minute. It's hard to do when you're on a junket to New York for two weeks with nothing to do but go to shows and hang with your friends in the music industry. But whatever. I'm back now. Well-rested and ready. I saw Daft Punk from a ferris wheel in the middle of the desert. What else do I need?
So, returning from a run this morning I find a piping hot new song from Lackthereof -- Danny from Menomena's long-running side project. This is good news. And I don't mean piping hot like a dancefloor anthem. It's more like piping hot like a fresh baked muffin, right from the muffin to my breakfast in bed. Warm, comforting and necessary on a day like today. I've slept in a few different places lately - couches, planes, cars, and even one sleepless night in a hotel at lake las vegas (who knew vegas had a lake?), but this morning is the first in a long time that I felt rested and like myself.
Danny repeats the refrain over and over again, peacefully and gently. "Into the mouth of the Columbia" becomes a mantra, a worn prayer bead. It's beautiful and delicate like those perfect mornings and open to inpretations as varied as baptism and toobin'. And for this I love it. What's most impressive is how the song holds none of the explosive tension of his drumming with Menomena, but instead feels coated in haze and slowed to a crawl. It's a fine contrast.
At any rate, the new album, My Haunted, will be available on vinyl through FilmGuerrero and digitally through the band's site soon. Highly recommended.
