Cobra-la-la-la-la-la!

Cobra Dukes - Airtight

I love the internets. Here's why: I got contacted a little while back by this great label from the UK that I'd not heard of before called Prestel. They were, as is generally the case, looking to have me check them out, maybe for a feature on this here blog. Unfortunately, the internet being the great equalizer that it is (everyone is online!), most requests of this type end up not being very good, but the folks at Prestel have some great tricks up their sleeves. See, the label was started by the same folks that helped Mylo set up his Breastfed label, and have connections to dance music that go back to an important player in the UK dance scene of the late 90s, the Glasgow Underground label.

Cobra Dukes, a young British band, are one of the labels select signings - this track comes comes from just the fourth single the label has released - and they know their way around the dance-rock hybrid style. I think this track is particularly good, and has a good EBM, mid-period Depeche Mode flavor to it. But the secret to Prestel's success is the remixes! Earlier Prestel singles have featured another Belgian duo, Fredo & Thang, Melbourne Australia's Knightlife (signed to Cut Copy's Cutters label), and Zones (production alias of Kevin McKay, Mylo's engineer and producer for Breastfed's Linus Loves) remixes.

This one features a pair of excellent slowed down versions by Belgium's new cosmic-disco stars Aeroplane, and a JD Twitch (of Optimo) mix that pushes the EBM side of the song way over the top and turns it into a real stormer of a track. Just huge.

Visit the Cobra Dukes' myspace page to hear more of their stuff, and be sure to check out the Prestel website where you can stream all of their releases. Then, for the DJ-minded folks, visit your favorite local record shop to pick up the 12"s OR, hit up Beatport to get your high-bitrate-download on. This single comes out next month, and is highly recommended as one to watch.

JD Twitch from Optimo used to run a club in Edinburgh, my adopted home-town, from 1990 - 2000 called Pure. The link is off the Optimo website to a mp3 mix of the music from pure. I've not listened to it but I'm sure it's excellent.
