You'll be all right, if you don't lose sight

So there's this thing in Minneapolis called the Hootenanny, organized by City Pages alumnus, Replacements book author, and general man about town Jim Walsh. It's an informal gathering of musicians in a coffee shop basement, with participants ranging from virtual unknowns to former Jayhawks.

I played at the Hootenanny a couple weeks ago and sat next to this guy.

Brian Just - Blue.

Brian played this at the event, and I was fortunate enough to sit between him and one of the people harmonizing with him. Then, one of the guys harmonizing picked up an empty beer bottle to play slide guitar. What a great song to be in the middle of, and especially to be surrounded by those "doo doo" vocals (which Brian accurately describes as "a cross between 'Walk On The Wild Side' and the Sesame Street theme song"). I love all the subtle touches on this track.

Brian, also a member of Robots alumni Beight, has a new record coming out next month, and this song will be on it. You can find his other records at his Web site.
