Any Old Lie Will Do
Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal.
This is the one that will get in your head. It'll be there all day. It isn't until the end, the very last little fade out about the reddest strawberries that we really get to see what Fleet Foxes are all about. This is hammock music. This is music for barefootin' around in your backyard in the dry heat with a cool breeze. Maybe you're helping your buddy take that chimney down off his barn finally, or maybe it's something simple as a picnic. I'm not going to tell you how to spend your time. The point is that I believe every word they say and don't want to stop listening when its over.
This new album of theirs, self-titled, is the best thing I've heard all year. I want to take it with me everywhere. I have no complaints. Every song brings something to the table, and you can play spot that influence all day long. You've heard the most obvious touchstones and to that I say whatever. These guys stand on their own quite well. I saw them live last month and it was nothing short of outstanding. I wish everyone had been there.
We'll have to wait some time before we can buy it, but dear god don't even hesitate. It'll be worth every hard earned dollar.
And listen: I know folks keep saying the "indie" music is basically the new adult contemporary and fuck, maybe that's true. There's only so long you can listen to the latest screaming kids in the latest shitty venue before you want to kick back on the porch with a pimlico and put your feet up. And I can guarantee that we'll be hearing from these dudes a lot this year, so we might as well get used to it.
In the meantime, why don't you go pick up their amazing little Ep from sub pop. It's cheap and the mp3s are good quality.
