Megamixxxed

Daedelus - Daedelus' Candied Assortment (megamix)

Daedelus, aka Alfred Darlington, has been making his own brand of synth and sample-heavy music since the early 00s, which has appeared on a half dozen labels including Plug Research, Mush, Eastern Developments, as well as on our own Music For Robots Vol. 1 CD.

Daedelus' newest album, Love To Make Music To is being released by our friends over at Ninja Tune, and it is a real corker. I personally loved his previous effort, 2006's Denies The Day's Demise, but I think the new record takes more risks and makes some cool sonic leaps and bounds. Of course much of the wildness, and sense that 'things are about to go off the rails' come from Daedelus' use of the Monome box, which are like some crossbreed between midi controllers and live digital instruments (have a look at the videos over here to get a sense of it), which the box's creators actually had Daedelus test out during the prototype phase.

Anyway, the album is great, and instead of posting a song from it, we've got an actual mini-megamix kind of thing that Alfred made for us - there's a handful of tracks from the new record mixed in there (I love the opening song, "Fair Weather Friends), as well as some Mr. Oizo, Prince, and Aphex Twin mashed in there for fun. Supposedly this sounds a lot like his live shows - unfortunately I missed the Knitting Factory show he did (actually there's an awesome little clip of him tearing things up over on laineycakes' flickr page - note his fancy dress - his press materials say he is big on Victorian era clothes) - but have a look over at Daedelus' myspace page for his upcoming live dates.

Love To Make Music To comes out July 15th in the US, but you can order it now via the Ninja Tune store if you can't wait (and don't mind paying the import cost). The first single, for "Make It So" has a slick XXXChange remix on it that I am way into. Highly recommended!

Also look out for a collaborative album with his wife Laura Darling later this year.

And come to Hugs tonight!

I saw him recently here in Boulder, and it was amazing. Hes so soft spoken and modest about what he does, when he's one of the most original artists I've ever seen.
