Always gets me into trouble

ron sexsmith

I suppose I should be used to it by now, but technology always amazes me. I'm in a coffee shop in Cape Cod right now (Cafe Zia in East Orleans, if you're wondering - I recommend their breakfast burritos) - and writing something I usually write from a couch in Minneapolis. You'd think "the Internet" wouldn't be shocking to me still, but damn, how great is this? Music everywhere, from everywhere.

Ron Sexsmith - Brandy Alexander

But as usual, I digress. I've known about Ron Sexsmith for a while, but I became a full-time fan when he released his Steve Earle-produced album Blue Boy in 2001. His songs are just amazingly written, from the subtle lyrics to the meticulous arrangements.

This track is from his new record Exit Strategy For The Soul, out in America on July 8 and in his native Canada on July 1. It's more horn-driven than his work usually is, and what can I say? I'm a sucker for horns. He co-wrote this one with Leslie Feist, who recorded it for her crazy-seller The Reminder last year.

Order Exit Strategy For The Soul from Ron himself. I'll be playing this one in a rental car as I drive from lazy spot to lazy spot; it's a summer song for late afternoon.

Oh, cool! I remember picking up Cobblestone Runway when it came out years ago. I always reeeeally wanted to like that album and his voice/style... but I just never really got into it.

Seems like that's the story of his career, too. All I'm picturing in my head right now is Thorny from Super Troopers saying "Canada, eh? Allllmost made it."
