Cut the World

Moscow Olympics - Cut the World.

Driving back from Malibu, having spent the last two days working on a deck, I was greeted not by traffic but by an unbelievably thick layer of haze hovering over the city. The closer you got the more you could see, but from far out it was just a blur.

Moscow Olympics traffic in pastiche. The drum beat, the interwoven guitar lines, the hushed, hazy vocals – all of it is familiar. And when it all builds in the pre-chorus without actually erupting, even that tension is familiar. Still, it works, and I like it. I actually haven’t been able to figure out what these dudes are saying, outside of “cut this world,” but for me this is more about atmosphere than anything else.

So when I’m driving home and all I can see is joists and screws and redwood, and I don’t want to think about anything else because I’m too tired and I just want something I can lean into, I could do worse than listen to this new little album from Moscow Olympics.

I don’t know much about the band aside that they’re from the Philippines. You can guess this new mini-album from the swedish folks at Lavender. Why is a Swedish label putting out an album from the Philippines? I have no idea. Maybe someone is playing tricks on me.

It really reminds me of the Dismemberment Plan. Those short opening guitar lines and the chiming guitar sound.

Greetings fellow Angeleno. I think "Cut the World' is one of the best albums of 2008. Hopefully, the word will get out about this band - they are truly deserving.
