A lion amongst all the jackals

At the risk of stating the obvious, this one's all about the rhythm. The notes are just window dressing to that syncopated beat, which is familiar but new.
It's tempting to tie this sound to what Vampire Weekend and others are up to - the whole Paul Simon/Peter Gabriel influence, and maybe it's a valid point. But I think the common thread is minimalism, or then again, maybe (I know I sound like an ass, but stick with me) pointilism - with each staccato note and periodic strum combining to make this song. That idea is also reflected in the album cover over there, with dots and brush blots forming a single image.
Takka Takka is from Brookyln, and the band formed in 2004. The guys - that's Gabe Levine, Rene Planchon, Grady Jurrens, Conrad Ducette, Drew Thurlow - got their break opening for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, which is a great bill. I can picture the two bands working really well together.
CYHSY's drummer Sean Greenhalgh produced the band's new record Migration, which came out July 29 on Ernest Jenning. It's currently sold out on Amazon, which I'm betting has something to do with the album's Pitchfork rating. It's well-deserved.
You can buy the record from the band's label.
