Pretty much everything written about Marnie Stern includes a variation of the word "shred". And I can attest to the fact that it's impossible to do without using that word, so here goes.
Marnie Stern can fucking shred. Her new album is called This Is It & I Am It & You Are It & So Is That & He Is It & She Is It & It Is It & That Is That, and I'm going kind of crazy for it. I was at work the other day, and slipped it into the disc drive not knowing anything about it. I'd heard her name, but didn't know anything about her music. Then my ass was rocked clean off, and I had a really, really productive day at work. Adrenaline can do that.
This record is full of organized chaos, and that's because underneath Stern's crazy guitars are songs - complete, well-written songs. And that combination makes this album impossible to dislike.
