If the Rain Turns to Snow Up There
Mountains - Choral
This is the transitioning of two elements, bridging a gap between two points in time and space. Maybe it’s the point between dreaming and waking, or perhaps the point between a dry wind and a cool rain. It could be the split second between ennui and a true smile, a flash between stomach churning fear and overwhelming release. It is a respiratory limbo, counting each breath in and out, in and out in a calm loop. We know that something is about to happen but there is no rush to get there. The whole song is like one, mile-long bow stretched across a quiet string, with the tiniest melodic guitar line at the end.
So as it rains and rains here in Los Angeles and we have a day or two in between sunny ones, we can savor the transition, the chance to catch our breath.
Mountains, releasing records for years, have ended up on Thrill Jockey, with this track as the opener and title of their newest release. It’s twelve minutes long and a good taste of what’s to come on the album. It will be released on February 17th.
