I’ll run when the gun drops the dove again

Aimee Mann’s new record Charmer came out a few weeks ago, and it’s the usual: there’s bitterness, wry observations about relationships, lyrics about the ways in which we kid ourselves. It’s all set to beautiful melodies and (mostly) midtempo time signatures. I’m not complaining–the dependability of an Aimee Mann album is one of the best parts about her work, and it’s been fun to watch her change her sound, ever so slightly, from baroque pop to folk-tinged rock.

Charmer features her best song in years, “Labrador,” whose video is directed by the great Tom Scharpling and features Jon Hamm, Jon Wurster, and Ted Leo. It’s a shot-by-shot remake of the video for ‘Til Tuesday’s “Voices Carry,” and it is ridiculous in every way. Behold both videos above.

Charmer is out now on Mann’s SuperEgo Records.
